System Requirements

Operating System: Windows XP (32-bit or 64-bit)

Main Memory: 2+ GB of RAM

Graphics Card: 256+ MB of VRAM
NVIDIA G80 or better (i.e. 8000/9000 series)
- or -
ATI R600 or better (i.e. 2000/3000 series)

Graphics Driver: Latest version of the graphics driver, with the following exception: The ATI Catalyst Drivers 9.8 and 9.9 have known incompatibilities with AltaViewer. Catalyst Driver 9.7, which works well with AltaViewer, can be downloaded from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Other: 3-Button mouse

This PDF details how to find the above information for you computer. There is also a simple application that automatically gathers the needed system information and prints it to a file.

If the minimum specifications are not met, then performance may be degraded. Specifically, dataset load time may increase and interactivity of slice and volume rendering may decrease. Time to generate movies and reformats may also increase. AltaViewer will not run at all with some graphics cards and drivers that are significantly older than the specification. In that case an error message will be displayed when AltaViewer is launched.

File Formats

AltaViewer supports the following input file formats:

  • NRRD/NHDR (Nearly Raw Raster Data)
  • VFF (GE MicroView Format)
  • UVF (Unified Volume Format)

AltaViewer can also convert DICOMs to one of the supported file formats. Please refer to the User Guide for additional details.

Dataset Size

The maximum dataset file size that AltaViewer supports depends on the input file format and the computer specifications. For datasets that exceed your system specs, AltaViewer can convert your dataset to the UVF (Unified Volume Format) format. The UVF format allows large datasets to be loaded into AltaViewer. Here are some rules of thumb for different formats and platforms:

NRRD and VFF maximum file size:
  • XP 64-bit computers: 50% of RAM or 2GB less than total RAM (whichever is greater)
  • XP 32-bit computers: 750 MB

UVF maximum file size:
  • Unlimited in theory. Currently tested with datasets up to 128 GB on both 32-bit and 64-bit XP computers.

Most laptop and desktop computers today are running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.

If you are not using the UVF format, then the maximum dataset size your computer can handle will vary depending on the application. For example, AltaViewer can handle larger datasets for rendering slices than for rendering 3D volumes because the entire dataset must be loaded for 3D volume rendering. This is not true for UVF files, which are designed to maintain interactivity for both slice and volume rendering even as dataset size increases.

How to Find Your Computer's Network Interface Address

The AltaViewer permanent license (not the free 14-day trial license) is locked to a specific machine based on the computer's Network Interface Address (not the IP address). You can find instructions for finding this information using command line or from the start menu for both Windows XP and Windows 7.
